A/c light flashing?

My daughter's 95 Eclipse had the bolt come out of the compressor hub, and it rattled around for a day untill I could put a bolt and shim back in it. The air gap is correct between the hub and the pulley, and all the belts are on and tight, and the static pressure is 100psi in the a/c system. The system was working fine untill the bolt came out. The compressor turns normally, and the fans come on when hit the a/c switch, but the clutch does not engage, and after a few seconds, the fans go off and the light starts flashing. Any one know what may be wrong?

If the compressor turns over and is not frozen you may just have a bad compressor clutch magnet. When the bolt came loose things had to wobble a bit and the wiring to the clutch magnet may have been damaged. Test for power to the magnet and if you have the belt off see if the clutch engages. If the a/c works long enough when turned on you might be able to see if the compressor clutch engages and spins the complete clutch pack.
Reply:I'm assuming you're talking about the outer pulley bolts... one of those being missing shouldn't cause it to rattle around too badly. If it was rattling, however, it's likely your clutch is history and possibly your compressor. Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, your compressor needs to come off the car to remove the clutch. Once you have the clutch off, if there's any notchiness or wobble in the compressor shaft it needs to be replaced as well. This is one part that I recommend aftermarket as OEM is about $1400. If the compressor is really bad for some reason, look in the high side port and see if there's any metal whatsoever... if so, you'll need to flush the system and replace the dryer.
